For the past 10 years, the Flint African American Film Series, has served as a meaningful platform for cultural expression and community engagement. Now, in partnership with the Charles H. Curated by a committee of community members, the series showcases films featuring African American actors, writers, filmmakers, and producers. Following each screening, CFI hosts panel discussions with local and national leaders, professionals, and residents to explore the film’s themes and share personal experiences. These discussions create a space for community members to connect, build relationships, and engage in meaningful dialogue. Join us for an afternoon of culture, knowledge, and understanding as we showcase these films to our community.
The inaugural event, which is part of CFI’s Culture Shock Program, is 12:30 p.m. Saturday, May 24, at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, 315 E Warren Ave, Detroit, MI 48201. We will be showing Butterfly in the Sky about the story of the popular PBS TV show Reading Rainbow. The documentary highlights LeVar Burton, the host of Reading Rainbow from 1983 until 2006, and provides an in-depth examination of the obstacles he and the show’s creators encountered while striving to foster a passion for reading through television. The movie has a 100 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Thank you to our generous sponsors – Ford Motor Company and the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History.
