Glenn Wilson accepts the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Champion of the Year Award from Tim Herman and Andrew Younger of Flint and Genesee Group.

Flint, Mich. — Communities First, Inc. (CFI) was recognized as the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) Champion of The Year at the Flint & Genesee Group’s 11th Annual Art of Achievement Awards, celebrating organizations and individuals that drive positive change across the region.

The award, given during a ceremony in Flint Wednesday Nov. 5, honors CFI’s long-standing commitment to building inclusive, equitable communities through housing, economic development, cultural programming, and community engagement. Since its founding in 2010, the Flint-based nonprofit has been at the forefront of creating environments where everyone—regardless of background—can thrive.

“This award is truly a reflection of our team and the community we serve,” said Glenn Wilson, Co-Founder, President and CEO of Communities First, Inc., who accepted the award on behalf of the organization. “This recognition belongs to every team member, partner, and resident who helps us live out our mission each day. It’s a team effort.”

Wilson added that CFI operates under the belief that the organization is here to provide opportunities for all.

“Children deserve safe, happy homes. Adults deserve a fair chance to have housing and employment,” Wilson said. “Everyone benefits from new experiences that expand their outlook on the world. This is not just a moment for us — it’s a commitment to serve all. It’s a commitment to doing good, not because it’s convenient, but because it’s the right thing to do.”

DEI Champion of the Year Award.

CFI creates and provides high-quality, affordable housing that serves seniors, individuals with disabilities, low-income families, veterans, and people transitioning from homelessness. Beyond housing, CFI offers wraparound support services including credit-building workshops, financial education, wellness programming, family relationship coaching, and recovery support—helping residents not just find stability but thrive.

The nonprofit also centers community voice and leadership, empowering residents through councils, youth engagement programs, and neighborhood planning. CFI’s holistic approach ensures that those most impacted by community challenges have a seat at the table—and the tools to shape solutions.

Through its cultural and community programming, CFI celebrates the diversity of Flint and Genesee County while fostering unity and understanding. Signature initiatives include:

  • A Taste of Culture – a vibrant global celebration of food, music, and art that promotes cross-cultural appreciation and pride;
  • Movies Under the Stars – free outdoor, family-friendly film nights that bring neighborhoods together;
  • African American Film Series – powerful films and discussions exploring race, identity, and justice;
  • Levitt AMP Flint Music Series – free concerts that highlight diverse musical artists and cultures; and
  • The GatHERing – an empowering convening for women of all backgrounds focused on connection, healing, and leadership.

CFI’s economic equity efforts further advance inclusion by supporting local, minority-owned businesses, offering vendor opportunities, and helping individuals overcome employment barriers through workforce and entrepreneurship programs.

Internally, the organization leads by example, maintaining a diverse staff and leadership team reflective of the communities it serves and modeling equitable hiring and organizational practices. CFI also collaborates across sectors to promote systems-level change throughout the region.

“Communities First, Inc. doesn’t see DEI as a box to check,” Wilson added. “When we lift people up, celebrate culture, and create opportunity, we all win.”

The Flint & Genesee Group’s Art of Achievement Awards celebrate excellence in business, community, and hospitality. The Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Champion Award recognizes a business or organization that has demonstrated leadership in helping make Flint and Genesee County a place of opportunity and inclusion for those who live and work in the county.
