DETROIT, MI – Communities First, Inc. (CFI) in collaboration with the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, is thrilled to announce the Detroit debut of its celebrated African American Film Series.
The inaugural event, which is part of CFI’s Culture Shock Program, will take place on Saturday, May 24, 2025, at the Charles H. Wright Museum, 315 E. Warren Ave., Detroit, MI 48201. Doors open at 12:30 p.m. for an afternoon of food, music, film, and community dialogue.
Guests will enjoy live music and lunch beginning at 12:30 p.m., followed by a 2 p.m. screening of Butterfly in the Sky, the acclaimed documentary chronicling the legacy of Reading Rainbow and its iconic host, LeVar Burton. With a rare 100% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the film dives deep into the creative and social challenges of inspiring literacy through television, and the groundbreaking impact the show had on generations of children.
Following the film, a community panel discussion will explore key themes and share personal reflections. Attendees will also have a chance to win exciting prize giveaways.
Recently completing its 10th year in Flint, the African American Film Series has served as a vital platform for celebrating Black culture and creating space for conversation and connection. The expansion to Detroit marks a significant milestone in the program’s mission to make cultural storytelling more accessible and inclusive.
“We’re honored to bring the African American Film Series to Detroit in partnership with the Charles H. Wright Museum,” said Glenn Wilson, President and CEO of Communities First. “This is more than a movie screening—it’s a space for community, reflection, and cultural celebration. We believe in the power of film to inform, inspire, empower and build community.”
Curated by a diverse committee of community members, the film series features works by African American actors, writers, and filmmakers. Each event is designed to engage audiences through shared experiences, meaningful discussions, and the celebration of Black excellence in the arts.
The film screening is part of the activities the Wright Museum is hosting for African Liberation Weekend, which is a celebration of the rich heritage, resilience, and creativity of African and African American communities. Through storytelling, film, art, and conversation, this special weekend honors the spirit of liberation with engaging programs for all ages. Go here for details.
“The African American Film Series is a natural extension of our mission to honor and preserve African American history and culture,” said Neil A. Barclay, President & CEO of the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History. “We’re honored to collaborate with Communities First, Inc. to bring this impactful program to Detroit during African Liberation Weekend, fostering meaningful dialogue, education, and a sense of unity.”
