Black Violin

Communities First, Inc. and The Whiting recently established a partnership to increase equity in performing arts audiences. Together we are reaching out to underserved populations in an effort to broaden access to arts and culture and break down barriers to participation. Their first collaborative effort centered on Black Violin, a classically trained string duo that fuses classical, hip-hop and pop music. The Whiting presented this unique ensemble in their auditorium on Thursday, Oct. 30th. CFI and the The Whiting offered 30 tickets for this performance to a diverse range of groups, including Flint Public Housing Commission to El Ballet Folklorico Estudiantil, a Mexican folk dance group.

CFI and The Whiting will continue to work together throughout the 2014-2015 to engage low to moderate income families in performances at The Whiting. Glenn Wilson, President/CEO of Communities First, Inc. said, “This partnership aligns with Communities First, Inc.’s goal of increasing equity in our community and promoting an improved quality of life. By providing access and opportunity to individuals that have been historically disconnected from the arts, we hope to increase interest and appreciation for arts and culture.”
Jarret Haynes, Executive Director of The Whiting said, “The Whiting is committed to building its community engagement initiatives, and the collaboration with CFI around our presentation of Black Violin is a prime example of our organization’s shared vision. We are delighted to partner with CFI in harnessing the transformative power of the arts for the enrichment of our entire community.”

CFI and The Whiting brought Black Violin to the Madison Academy high school campus in Burton for an entertaining and educational experience. The ensemble performed for students, spoke about music and answered questions. Their message was one that encouraged kids to think outside the box, challenge stereotypes and pursue their dreams. After the performance, information about music lessons and financial aid was distributed to students in hopes of inspiring them to participate in the arts. Students showed an interest in attending the Black Violin performance at The Whiting, so Communities First, Inc. offered free tickets to the first 20 students with their student id.
