Communities First, Inc. has partnered with the Flint Institute of Arts to host an African American Film Series at the Flint Institute of Arts. The series is designed to inspire, inform, empower and entertain attendees. The event kicked off in November and has hosted films in December and January. The final film in the series, Olympic Pride, American Prejudice will be on Thursday, February 9 and is sponsored in part by Cinnaire and NBC25. Following the film, there will be a discussion with Dr. Judi Brown Clarke, a 1984 Olympic Silver Medalist.
Dr. Brown Clarke is currently Diversity Director for the National Science Foundation’s BEACON Center at Michigan State University and Lansing City Councilperson. In the 400-Meter Hurdles event, she is a five-time National Champion and silver medalist in the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, California. She has held numerous national records, and still owns an unbroken World Record as a member of the sprint medley relay team. She is a member of the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame, Michigan State University Hall of Fame, and was named as one of the “Athletes of the Year,” specifically “1987 Sportswoman of the Year” by Sports Illustrated magazine.

In 1936, when 18 African American athletes participated in the Berlin Olympic Games, history forgot all but one - the great Jesse Owens. This acclaimed documentary is the story of the other 17. Film not rated, recommended for ages 12+.
The event takes place at Flint Institute of Arts (1120 East Kearsley Street, Flint). Doors open at 5:30pm and the film begins at 7:00pm. Seating is limited to the first 300 guests and a donation of $2 is suggested. Join us for food, live entertainment and a visit to the galleries.
