HUD Secretary Visits Oak Street

Communities First, Inc. was host to the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, Julian Castro during his recent visit to Flint. He and other dignitaries toured Oak Street Senior Apartments and discussed opportunities for other developments. President and CEO, Glenn Wilson was encouraged to continue working hard to produce more affordable housing for Flint residents. Secretary Castro remarked that he was impressed with the development and excited about the Swayze Court Apartments project. Secretary Castro had an opportunity to interact with several residents who shared their stories and commented on how much they have enjoyed living at Oak Street.

Several other dignitaries and community partners joined in the visit. Guests included: Congressman Dan Kildee, HUD Midwest Administrator Antonio Riley, Michigan Field Office Director Michael Polsinelli, Michigan State Housing Development Authority Executive Director Kevin Elsenheimer, Flint Mayor Dr. Karen Weaver, Flint Councilman Eric Mays, Michigan LISC Program Officer Sue Peters, and Ruth Mott Foundation Program Officer Elizabeth Jordan.

During his visit, Secretary Castro also meet with Mayor Weaver to better understand the needs of the city as we continue to work through the water crisis. He emphasized that banks were being told to continue lending in Flint and that they were committed to Flint’s recovery.
