Drawing the Lines

This year Communities First, Inc., had the privilege of partnering with the Michigan Nonprofit Association in an effort to bring awareness to the newly minted Michigan Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission (MICRC). This commission is tasked with the responsibility of re-drawing district line, which occurs every 10 years following the US Census.

Communities First, Inc. is hosting a redistricting forum called Drawing the Lines on Thursday, October 7, 2021 from 6pm-7:30pm at Coolidge Park Apartments in the Gymnasium.

What is Redistricting?
Redistricting is the process of redrawing district boundaries to guarantee equal voter representation.

Why is Redistricting Important?
The redrawing of district boundaries is to comply with federal standards concerning equal population and the Voting Rights Act.

Where did the MICRC originate?
In 2018, the voters in Michigan amended the constitution to make the citizens—not legislators or special interest groups—responsible for drawing district lines. The redrawing affects the Michigan House and Senate and the U.S. Congress.

There will also be a public hearing of the Michigan Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission in Flint on October 26. Times and location will be updated as soon as the details are available.
