Oak School Ground Breaking
Antonio Riley, HUD’s Midwest Regional Administrator; City of Flint’s Mayor Dayne Walling; Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05); Chris LaGrand, MSHDA’s Chief Housing Investment Officer along with Chuck Vliek, Executive Director of Michigan LISC were among many who attended the groundbreaking ceremony for Communities First, Inc.'s (CFI) $5 million HUD 202 Supportive Housing for the Elderly project that will redevelop the former, vacant Oak School into a 24-unit apartment complex for low-income seniors. The building is located in the Grand Traverse Neighborhood, which is within Flint LISC’s strategic investment area. Construction is expected to take a little more than a year and units will be approximately 540 square feet will include a bedroom, living room, bathroom and full function kitchen. Community space will be provided in the building, allowing tenants access to meeting areas, computers and exercise equipment.
CFI’s mission is to impact distressed communities through economic development activities, creative entrepreneurial opportunities, and the development of affordable housing. This project is CFI’s first major undertaking but the organization already has other projects in the pipeline that LISC anticipates supporting as well. The Oak School Ground Breaking was held on September 6, 2013.
