Communities First, Inc. hosted the inaugural event of its Culture Shock cultural outreach program as a part of Artwalk in downtown Flint on June 13, 2014. The second Friday Artwalk is a collaborative effort that exposes participants to various galleries, artistic exhibits and open houses in the downtown area. The goal of Culture Shock is to expose citizens of Flint to arts and culture in fresh ways, challenge stereotypes and traditional perceptions and increase equity in the arts.
This first event featured a trio comprised of flute, viola and cello that performed a variety of music on the corner of Saginaw and 2nd Streets. Passers-by were invited to participate in the performance: for a donation of $5 they had the opportunity to conduct the musicians! Each guest conductor was able to “conduct” the trio for 60 seconds, have their photograph taken and have their photo posted on social media. Proceeds from this fundraiser were used to further Communities First Inc.'s mission.
